EPA Section 608 Technician Certification Exam Prep
The EPA 608 is the federal certification every HVAC and refrigeration technician in America needs before touching refrigerant — the same credential in all 50 states, and it never expires. Study the four exam sections by topic with every answer explained, then run practice tests assembled exactly like the real exam: 25 questions per section, scored at the real pass line.

The EPA 608 tracks
Universal — All Four Sections
The exam: EPA Section 608 Universal Technician Certification exam (Core + Type I + Type II + Type III) — given by EPA-approved certifying organizations (ESCO Institute, Mainstream Engineering, and others). Closed book, proctored.
Every section, one sitting: Core + Type I + Type II + Type III. Pass all four sections and you can service any appliance the 608 rules cover — this is the certification most employers ask for.
Straight talk: Our practice test assembles exactly like the real exam: 25 Core + 25 Type I + 25 Type II + 25 Type III. The results screen breaks your score down by section — judge yourself by the weakest section, not the average, because the real exam does.

Type I — Small Appliances
The exam: EPA Section 608 Type I Technician Certification exam (Core + Type I) — given by EPA-approved certifying organizations (ESCO Institute, Mainstream Engineering, and others). Closed book, proctored.
Core + the small-appliance section: factory-sealed products with 5 lb of refrigerant or less.
Straight talk: One certifying organization (Mainstream Engineering) also offers Type I online as an OPEN-book exam — but the pass mark rises to 84%, and a Core section passed open-book does not count toward Type II, III, or Universal later; you would retake Core proctored. This practice track follows the standard proctored, closed-book exam at 70% per section.

Type II — High-Pressure Appliances
The exam: EPA Section 608 Type II Technician Certification exam (Core + Type II) — given by EPA-approved certifying organizations (ESCO Institute, Mainstream Engineering, and others). Closed book, proctored.
Core + the high-pressure section: residential and commercial AC, heat pumps, and supermarket refrigeration.
Draws on the full 150-question EPA 608 bank — the whole Core topic is free below, no pass needed.
Type III — Low-Pressure Appliances
The exam: EPA Section 608 Type III Technician Certification exam (Core + Type III) — given by EPA-approved certifying organizations (ESCO Institute, Mainstream Engineering, and others). Closed book, proctored.
Core + the low-pressure section: centrifugal chillers and other low-pressure machines.

How the real exam is scored — straight talk
The real Section 608 exam is scored per section, not on your average. Each section is 25 questions and needs 70% (18 of 25). You must pass Core to earn any certification at all; each Type you pass is yours even if another section falls short, and you retake only the sections you failed. Our practice tests give you an overall score and a by-section breakdown — judge your readiness by the breakdown, the way the real exam does.
Timing: EPA sets the questions and the pass standard; the EPA-approved certifying organizations run their own sessions and clocks (ESCO, for example, administers a two-section sitting at 120 minutes). Our practice timers — 120 minutes for the 100-question Universal test, 60 minutes for a 50-question Type test — are practice pacing, set so test day feels comfortable.
One more distinction: the 608 is a federal technician certification, not a state HVAC license. Some states also license HVAC contractors separately — the 608 doesn't replace that, and a state license doesn't replace the 608.
These are original practice questions written from EPA's published Section 608 test topics and 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F. They are not the real exam questions — those are never published.
Exam facts on this page come from the U.S. EPA's Section 608 pages and EPA-approved certifying organizations (researched November 2026). Confirm current requirements with your certifying organization before you test.
