Fall Gutter Maintenance Tips for Oklahoma Homes
Oklahoma fall means leaves, wind, and the occasional ice storm. A little gutter maintenance now saves you from water damage later. Here's what to check before winter.
1. Clean out leaves and debris
This is the big one. Leaves pile up fast in October and November, and a clogged gutter can't move water away from your house. Scoop out the debris by hand or with a gutter scoop, then flush the gutter with a garden hose to make sure water flows freely to the downspouts.
2. Make sure downspouts drain away from the house
Water dumping right next to your foundation is asking for trouble — basement leaks, cracked slabs, and washed-out soil. Downspouts should carry water at least several feet away from the house. If yours just end at the foundation, add an extension. It's one of the cheapest fixes with the biggest payoff.
3. Check for sagging sections and loose hangers
Summer storms and heavy debris put a lot of weight on gutters. Walk the perimeter and look for sections pulling away from the fascia or sagging in the middle. Tighten or replace loose hangers now — a sagging gutter holds standing water, which gets heavy fast and only makes the sag worse.
4. Inspect seams and end caps
Seams are the most common leak points on sectional gutters. Look for drips during the hose flush, and reseal any leaking joints with gutter sealant. If the same seam keeps failing, it may be time to consider seamless gutters, which eliminate most joints entirely.
5. Consider gutter guards before the leaves really fall
If you're tired of climbing a ladder twice a year, fall is the right time to add gutter screens or guards. They keep the big debris out while letting water through, and they cut maintenance way down.
6. Know when repair isn't enough
Some signs mean replacement, not repair: gutters pulling away along long stretches, rust or peeling paint on the inside, cracks or splits, or water pooling where it shouldn't even after cleaning. If you're seeing several of these at once, new gutters will cost less than the water damage they prevent.
